Style & Quality

I work primarily with fabrics sourced from textile mills located in and around the Scottish and English Borderlands. My collection features fine Scottish Tweeds, Tartans, and vibrant printed linens and cottons. Over the years, I’ve curated a beautiful selection of cloths, including tweeds from renowned makers such as Anthony Haines, Hinnigan, Lochcarron, Elliot, Linton Tweed, and Harris Tweed.

Each fabric tells a story, and I incorporate these rich materials into my designs. You’re also welcome to visit my studio in St. Boswells to select a fabric yourself, and I’ll create a bespoke bag tailored to your preferences. You can even commission a bag in a tartan of your choice or provide your own fabric to create something truly unique.

Every bag is handmade by me in my studio, located in the picturesque village of St. Boswells in the heart of the Scottish Borders. Surrounded by breathtaking landscapes and steeped in Scottish history, it’s the perfect setting to craft designs that honor the region’s heritage.

Scotland and England share a rich tradition of producing high-quality woven and printed textiles, sought after by designers worldwide. Although fewer mills remain in operation today, the fabrics they create are all the more special—a reflection of a long and storied history in textile craftsmanship..

My Collections

My range of handcrafted accessories includes handbags, scarves, purses, corsages, and brooches, alongside my whimsical gift collection featuring Frumpy Fairies, Cannie Men, and keyrings, cushiodesigned to complement the entire range.

Each handbag design is inspired by traditional Scottish words, giving every piece a unique, descriptive, and playful character. From Skeeries and Fantooshes to Peerie Poaks, the names reflect the style and construction of the bags. Many designs are available in two sizes—"Wee" or "Muckle"—with my signature bag being the "Muckle Fantoosh."

Over the years, my handbags have journeyed far and wide, finding homes with customers in France, Sweden, America, and Japan. A particular highlight was being invited to Japan to showcase my work at the British Fairs hosted by the Hankyu Department Stores in Hakata and Osaka. This incredible experience included filming a TV commercial in my studio and village, demonstrating my sewing skills, and spending 10 unforgettable days in Japan.

This opportunity strengthened ties between my business and Japan, and I now welcome Japanese customers to my studio when they visit Scotland—a testament to the universal appeal and charm of my designs.

About Me

Welcome! I’m Julia Cunningham, a handbag designer and maker based in the picturesque village of St Boswells, nestled in the heart of the Scottish Borders. With its charming village green, cricket club, award-winning bookshop, and delightful local shops and restaurants, St Boswells provides the perfect backdrop for my creative journey. It’s also where I enjoy life with my family and two cats.

My Journey

Creativity has been part of my life from an early age. I grew up watching my mum sew my clothes by hand and my granny knitting intricate dresses for my dolls. When I received a sewing machine as a teenager, it inspired me to continue their legacy and dive deeper into crafting.

After school, I trained as a Home Economist and spent many years working with adults with learning difficulties. In 2006, I decided to follow my passion for textiles, launching my own business from a tiny room in my home. By 2015, with my husband’s help, I moved into a custom-built garden studio—a space where my creativity flourishes.

My Inspiration

I’m captivated by the vibrant colors and rich textures of fabrics like tweeds, tartans, and prints, which feature prominently in my collections. My designs are a celebration of originality, quality, and a touch of fun—always evolving to bring something fresh and exciting to my customers.

Beyond the Studio

When I’m not creating, you’ll often find me cycling through the stunning landscapes of the Scottish Borders. I love capturing the beauty of the area, from rolling hills to historic landmarks, which inspire both my designs and my soul.
